Groceries Are So Expensive These Days

Anomaly started this conversation
Today, I went to Ralphs (I live in California), and 4 bags of groceries cost me $40! The smallest watermelon I could find cost me $9! Unbelievable.

 in response to PJsMom...   Hello,
I understand how hard it is to get coupons when you can't get the paper. I used to coupon when I was single as well but couldnt really do it full steam due to not being able to afford the sunday paper. Back then, I didnt have access to internet so I'm glad we can print some online ..I have not heard about stores charging tax, but that did happen to me at a Walgreens once. They were also very rude and tried to discourage me from getting back in line to use my register rewards in a separate transaction. I had to pull out their own coupond policy to let them know I had the right to use my rewards right then. Do you use any forum to get deals or do you just do it on your own? I use a site that tells me the deals then I make sure to get my paper or print the coupons I need. Sometimes you can print the same coupons online that the paper advertises. Hopefully I can pass any great deals that I find on to you..good luck and happy couponing!

in response to bookworm2011...   Hi bookworm!
I used to be like that, a couponing queen. Now that things have gotten much harder I am trying to get back into it. My only problem is obtaining coupons, I can't afford to get the paper ever week. I do print the ones from online sites. Today I went and used 14 bucks worth of coupons, but at one store all I purchases was food items and I have a food stamp card. They made me pay tax on the coupons I used? Never heard of that, but then I went to walmart and when I got home I added up what wasn't covered with my food stamps and they didn't charge me tax on the coupons........I guess it's just different stores....

If more people came to realize this, this country wouldn't be in the shape it is in today.

in response to dogeatdog...   I try to make my time on the computer as productive as possible. If I am not helping with advice or support on aidpage, I am writing companies to give comments/complaints on their products. I do this by going through my cabinets, refrigerator, and bathrooms to write down all the products I have that way if a company requests a upc code, they know I have really used thier product. I never ask for coupons, if you ask for them, they will refer you to their promotions...but mostly they send coupons just for the comments...I just compliment  a product or if something didn't work well I will complain..(diapers leaked and I paid 10 for them, got a check in the mail for 25 dollars plus coupons!)...in all, I spend about 10-15 hours a week doing couponing. I used to do more but went from working part time to full time. We just hired a nanny for our kids but for what we are paying her, it would be more advantageous for me to go back to working part time, and couponing more to save us money..I was a financial planner before becoming a Teacher and tell people all the time, its more what you spend than what you make. I have gotten hooked on couponing as I love to see the checkers faces when you owe hardly anything..Sadly in CA they make sure we cant make a profit or double coupons like you see on tv but I come pretty close saving at least 85 percent each time.

I nominate bookworm and pjsmom to do all my shopping from now on! lol

I think I remember seeing a show called couponing once. They were following this family around a store and they filled three baskets costing them only around $150.

Honestly, how much time do you spend researching this in order to get those deals?

in response to PJsMom...   I got hooked on couponing about a year ago..I couldn't believe all the free and cheap things that I could get! My family used to come over my house and shop from what I got, expensive razors, hair products , make up etc then I suggested I teach everyone how to do it, no one wants to learn but they want all of my stuff saying, "you got it free anyway", so I don't give it out anymore but will teach anyone thats willing how to get started. At walmart today, I got my dogfood( a big bag) for 1.28...my oil of olay face wash for 1.67..and training pants for my baby at 4.99 a bag regularly 9.99...Ive discovered lots of tips in the process, would be happy to share if anyone is interested. I save us thousands each year and have a ton of free stuff put up.

in response to Anomaly...   Although I am not couponing like I used to anymore (getting ready to start back though), you can get a WHOLE lot for a few cents or even FREE. If you are a Facebook subscriber search Coupon Divas, it is a wonderful source of information and even you tube videos on couponing!
I learned awhile back on how to stack coupons, as in you can use a store coupon (like walgreens) with a manufacter coupon to get double savings!
Stores know ahead of time what coupons are coming out that week, most people will use those coupons that week, if you wait, then you can catch that item on sale with the coupon and get it much cheaper!

Once Kroger had a buy one get one free sale on Panteen (sp?) shampoo and conditioner, I also had bogo free coupons for Panteen, used together, I got 8 bottles free!
Check it out, put fourth the effort and save some money!

in response to Anomaly...   :) Hi, Yes it is available in the US. I think it is called extreme couponing. They actual show on tv how these people do it. It's so amazing. I wish can remember which day its on. I will have to watch out for it again. It takes alot of patience I think though to shop like that all day then come home and put all that away. Thats a days work but if can save that much it is worth it.
I am usually always pretty good thankyou.

Hi! :) I'm doing well. Thanks! How are you? I have actually never seen that show. Do you remember what it's called, and if it's available in the U.S? That is pretty amazing, though!  I don't really coupon though. Instead, I usually buy what's on sale every time I go grocery shopping. I really should use coupons though.

Hi, :) How are you? I was wondering did you ever see that tv show on extreme couponing. I saw that a couple of times and some out there can actually go and shop with all those coupons and save tons of money. Some have actually one year worth of supplies. Some go and buy a thousand dollars worth of groceries and only pay like 50.00. I wish I could find a way to do that here in Canada. But.... going grocery shopping all day yikes don't think can handle that.
Have a great Day!

in response to Anomaly...   Hello, Thankyou am well. Yes I am from Canada. Our prices have increased here as well. Some of my friends go shopping in States cause they seem to get more for their money. When my kids were little I use to go grocery shopping once a month in Town of Tonawanda hope spelled that right. There use to be called a store BJ's. That is where we use to shop. I always came home with a bulk of food at the time where couldn't get here. If I want to go now I will have to first get my passport. My daughter goes to Buffalo alot. Sometimes to shop and other times for church events.

in response to positive thoughts...   Hi! :) How are you? Good to see that you are still a part of Aidpage. My guess is that watermelons just aren't in season right now. But aren't you from Canada? Anyways, groceries in general in the United States have risen in price.
